The Charlotte Bobcats have traded 27-year old center Tyson Chandler and 22-year old center Alex Ajinca to the Mavericks for 34-year old center Erick Dampier, 29-year old SG/SF Matt Carroll and 34-year old forward Eduardo Najera. Chandler played in 51 games (27 starts) in his only year with the Bobcats and he averaged 22.8 minutes, 6.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game. Alex Ajinca played in only 6 games (0 starts) last season for the Bobcats in which he averaged 5.0 minutes, 1.7 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. Ajinca played in 37 games (4 starts) in his two years with the Bobcats and he has averaged 5.7 minutes, 2.2 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game.

Erick Dampier played in 55 games (47 starts) for the Mavericks last season and he averaged 23.3 minutes, 6.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.4 blocked shots per game. He has now played in 921 games (749 starts) in his 14 years in the NBA and he has averaged 25.1 minutes, 7.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 1.5 blocked shots per game. It will be interesting to see if Dampier ever suits up for the Bobcats as his contract is not guaranteed. Matt Carroll played in 25 games (0 starts) for the Mavericks last season and he averaged 4.8 minutes, 1.8 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. He has now played in 351 games (81 starts) in his 7 years in the NBA and he has averaged 18.3 minutes, 7.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. Carroll can really shoot from long range and that likely appeals to the Bobcats. Eduardo Najera played in 46 games (5 starts) for the Mavericks & Nets last season and he averaged 14.9 minutes, 3.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. He has now played in 566 games (85 starts) in his 10 years in the NBA and he has averaged 18.7 minutes, 5.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.

UPDATE:  (9/14/2010) – The Bobcats have released Erick Dampier after trying to deal him without finding any takers.  I like this trade even less now for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats have signed 25-year old forward Dominic McGuire. Details of the contract have not been released as of yet. McGuire played in 51 games (2 starts) for the Wizards and Kings last season in which he averaged 6.0 minutes, 0.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. He has now played in 200 games (60 starts) in his three years in the NBA and he has averaged 15.4 minutes, 2.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. McGuire likely won’t get much P.T. in 2010-11 but it’s still good to have decent vets on the bench.

The Bobcats have re-signed 23-year old power forward Tyrus Thomas to a 5-year, $40 million dollar deal. Thomas played in 25 games (0 starts) for the Bobcats last season and he averaged 21.7 minutes, 10.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 1.5 blocked shots per game. He has now played in 279 games (95 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 20.4 minutes, 8.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.4 blocked shots per game. The Bobcats were smart to lock up Thomas because he has a huge upside and Larry Brown seems to bring out the best in him.

This series is not an easy draw for the defending Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic. The Bobcats seem to be a team on a mission directed by crusty old Larry Brown who knows how to win the big one. Here are a closer look at the matchups in this series:

Point Guard: Raymond Felton is not a great player by any stretch of the imagination but he’s more than good enough to get the job done. He played in 80 games (all starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 33.0 minutes, 12.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game. His game is almost identical to Jameer Nelson’s.

Jameer Nelson makes the Magic’s offense go despite being a shoot first player. He played in 65 games (64 starts) for the Magic this season and he averaged 28.6 minutes, 12.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Nelson will need to keep his teammates heavily involved in the offense because the Bobcats are a pretty good defensive basketball team.

EDGE: EVEN

Shooting Guard: Stephen Jackson has icewater in his veins. He has never seen a big shot he wasn’t willing to take. When the Bobcats traded for him early this year it signalled that they were going to play to win this season. Jackson played in 72 games (all starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 39.3 minutes, 21.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. With Vince Carter’s failures in playoffs past I look for Jackson to have a big series.

Vince Carter has never in his NBA career saved his best for last as he has struggled in the playoffs in the past. Carter played in 75 games (74 starts) for the Magic this season and he averaged 30.8 minutes, 16.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The Magic don’t need Carter to go off in this series but if he could average at least 15 points per game and hold Jackson down a bit the Magic will be happy.

EDGE: BOBCATS

Small Forward: Gerald Wallace is the best player on the Bobcats as he plays all out on both sides of the basketball court. He should abuse Matt Barnes in this series. Wallace played in 76 games (all starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 41.0 minutes, 18.2 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game. He is the most likely player on the Bobcats to posterize Dwight Howard as he backs down from no one.

Sure, Matt Barnes is the Kobe “Stopper”. He will have his hands full with Wallace. Barnes played in 81 games (58 starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 25.9 minutes, 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. The Magic just want him to play hard and make Wallace work for everything he gets.

EDGE: HUGE FOR BOBCATS

Power Forward: Boris Diaw won’t be overmatched physically like he is on most nights as Rashard Lewis is a soft power forward also. Diaw played in 82 games (all starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 35.4 minutes, 11.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Diaw is a defense first player who will get in Rashard Lewis’ face.

Rashard Lewis just never seemed to get into gear this season after his 10-game suspension to start the year (PED related). Lewis played in 72 games (all starts) for the Magic this season and he averaged 32.9 minutes, 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Lewis is still a good shooter and the Magic hope he’s on in this series.

EDGE: EVEN

Center: The Bobcats will likely be fouling Dwight Howard a lot with Tyson Chandler, Theo Ratliff and Nazr Mohammed sharing time in the middle. That’s 18 fouls to play with. Tyson Chandler will be the first center in for the Bobcats. He played in 51 games (27 starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 22.8 minutes, 6.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game. Chandler is no match for Dwight Howard.

Dwight Howard will be fouled a lot in this series and it’s a good strategy for the Bobcats to take. Howard played in 82 games (all starts) for the Magic this season and he averaged 34.7 minutes, 18.3 points, 13.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.8 blocked shots per game. If Howard can keep himself from getting frustrated due to the fouling he should have a big series.

EDGE: HUGE FOR THE MAGIC

BENCH: Both of these teams use their benches a lot. Tyrus Thomas (10.1 points, 6.1 rebouds, 0.9 assists and 1.5 blocks) will be a force in this series as he will push Rashard Lewis around when he is on the court. Nazr Mohammed (7.9 points, 5.2 rebounds) and Theo Ratliff (5.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots) will both be needed down low to counter Dwight Howard in this series. Larry Hughes, D.J. Augustin and Stephen Graham will also all likely get some P.T. in this series for the Bobcats.

J.J. Redick (9.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists) and Mickeal Pietrus (8.7 points, 2.9 rebounds) will be the two reserves used most in this series against the Bobcats. Don’t forget how solid Marcin Gortat played for the Magic last season as they can go with a Twin Tower look at times. Ryan Anderson, Jason Williams, Brandon Bass and Anthony Johnson are all capable players who could get some P.T. in this series.

EDGE: MAGIC

COACH: Larry Brown is one of the better coaches in NBA history. He led the Bobcats to a 44-38 record (53.7%) this season. He has a two year record with the Bobcats of 79-85 (48.2 %). Brown has now compiled a 1,089-885 record (55.2%) as a NBA head coach during the regular season and his teams are 100-89 (52.9%) in the post season. He led the Pistons to a NBA Championship during the 2003-04 season.

Stan Van Gundy is a great coach in his own right. He led the Magic to a 59-23 (72%) record during the regular season. He has now been in Orlando three years and he has a 170-76 record (69.1%) and he is 18-16 (52.9%) in the post season with the Magic.

EDGE: EVEN

PREDICTION: I see home court advantage being big in this series and I like the Magic in 6 games.

The Bobcats have signed 31-year old shooting guard Larry Hughes. Hughes played in 31 games (14 starts) for the Knicks this season and he averaged 26.5 minutes, 9.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game but he only shot 36.6% from the floor. Hughes has now played in 704 games (507 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 31.2 minutes, 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Hughes should fit right in on the Bobcats because he is a good defensive player.

The Bobcats have acquired 36-year old center Theo Ratliff from the Spurs. The Spurs wanted to just get rid of his salary so they pretty much gave him away for nothing. Ratliff played in 21 games (3 starts) for the Spurs this season and he was averaging 8.7 minutes, 1.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He has now played in 772 games (507 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 25.7 minutes, 7.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 2.5 blocked shots per game. The Bobcats wanted to improve at rebounding the ball and playing defense and I believe they did with the two trades they made today.

The Bobcats have acquired 23-year old power forward Tyrus Thomas from the Bulls for 30-year old shooting guard Flip Murray, 25-year old point guard Acie Law and a future first round pick. Thomas has played in 29 games (3 starts) for the Bulls this season and he is averaging 23.4 minutes, 8.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.7 blocked shots per game. Thomas has now played in 254 games (95 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 20.3 minutes, 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.4 blocked shots per game. Thomas will likely start at power forward for the Bobcats which would make Boris Diaw the sixth man. Flip Murray played in 46 games (1 start) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 21.6 minutes, 9.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Acie Law has played in 14 games (0 starts) for the Warriors and Bobcats and he has averaged 7.1 minutes, 3.4 points, 0.2 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. I love this trade for the Bobcats who might just pass up the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Standings thanks to Tyrus Thomas.

The Bobcats have acquired 31-year old SG/SF Stephen Jackson and 24-year old PG/SG Acie Law from the Warriors for 33-year old SG Raja Bell and 28-year old forward Vladimir Radmanovic. Jackson will bring offense to the Bobcats and they are in dire need of it. He played in 9 games (all starts) for the Warriors this season and he averaged 33.3 minutes, 16.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Jackson has now played in 608 games (517 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 32.5 minutes, 15.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Jackson has flown to Orlando and he will play against the Magic tonight for the Bobcats. Acie Law played in 5 games (0 starts) for the Warriors this season and he averaged 13.2 minutes, 6.2 points, 0.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He has now played in 116 games (7 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 12.9 minutes, 3.7 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.8 assists per game. The Bobcats wouldn’t have made this trade without Law who they think has a nice upside as he was a former first round pick of the Hawks.

Raja Bell has been banged up this season as he has a partially torn ligament in his wrist which could require surgery at some point this season. He played in 5 games (all starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 31.4 minutes, 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Radmanovic played in 8 games (0 starts) for the Bobcats this season and he averaged 16.6 minutes, 4.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game.

The Bobcats have had such trouble scoring points that this was a good risk as Jackson is a good offensive player. Getting Law back in this trade was a cherry on top of the cake for them. The Bobcats won’t miss the gimpy Bell or the overrated Radmanovic.

The Bobcats have signed 30-year old SG Flip Murray to a 1-year, $1.99 million dollar deal. Murray played in 80 games (2 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 24.7 minutes, 12.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game. He has now played in 412 games (90 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 22.8 minutes, 9.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. This was a smart move for the Bobcats as Murray brings offensive firepower off the bench. His main skill is putting the basketball in the basket.

25-year old point guard Raymond Felton has signed a 1-year qualifying offer worth $5.5 million bucks keeping him with the Bobcats for this season. Felton played in 80 games (54 starts) for the Bobcats last season and he averaged 30.1 minutes, 11.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. In four years with the Bobcats, Felton has played in 319 games (289 starts) and he has averaged 35.4 minutes, 13.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. This might be Felton’s last season in Charlotte as D.J. Augustin might be ready to take over the point soon.
